PERSONALITY

A guardian angel who carries herself with an air of ethereal grace. Gentle and soft-spoken, she generally has a calm and level-headed attitude, albeit with an undertone of sombre melancholy. Although she is quiet, she is very inquisitive and observant, always watching, always listening, taking in as much information as she can. This makes her skilled at reading and understanding people, but her high empathy can be to her own detriment at times. She has a strong sense of justice, however her lack of confidence and aversion to conflict means she can struggle to be assertive, leaving her in inner turmoil.

POWERS

Middle-tier power level. Primarily specialising in divination magic, secondarily abjuration magic. Powers include:

  • SECOND SIGHT: An innate sixth sense allows her to see the unseen. She has a supernatural hyperawareness of her immediate surroundings. Trying to physically hide something from her, or sneak up undetected, is nigh impossible. She is also able to see though illusions.
  • LOOKING DEEPER: The reach of her second sight can be extended further, allowing her to know what is occurring in other places. However, scrying like this takes much more concentration, and only works in certain circumstances, affected by factors such as familiarity with the target.
  • LOOKING FORWARD/BACK: There are times she can see beyond the present - echoes of the past, even vague premonitions of the future. However, this is difficult to deliberately control, usually manifesting unintentionally through dreams or an intuitive gut feeling. Deciphering this is complicated, and not always accurate.
  • PROTECTION: Creation of wards to shield herself or others.
  • HEALING: Quick to heal from physical wounds. She can also heal others, but it comes at the cost of her own vitality.

Standard powers all angels possess to some degree:

  • IMMORTALITY: Like all angels, Polaris is ageless and sempiternal. She can still be injured, but the only way to truly kill her is by destroying the soul with magic.
  • SUPERHUMAN STRENGTH AND ENDURANCE: Although she is relatively weak by angel standards, this is still stronger than a mortal human.

TRIVIA

  • A common misconception about being a clairvoyant is that she is able receive and read prophecy as if it were fact. It does not work like that, and she is tired of people asking. Fate is not written in stone, and she cannot predict anything with certainty. If anything, she would rather avoid trying, because she believes that making plans based on false assumptions can sometimes be even more dangerous.
  • Haunted by recurring nightmares of her own death... She is unsure whether it is a memory of her past life, or an omen of the future.
  • Her hyperawareness is a double edged sword at times. She is prone to overstimulation and sensory overload. Frequently practices meditation to clear the mind. Prefers to seek out peaceful and quiet places.
  • In truth, she feels very unworthy and burdened by the responsibility that comes with power like hers. What's worse are the expectations placed on her because of it. Everyone else seems to have their own ideas on how she should use it - or how they can use her.
  • This does not stop her from using it for mundane and inconsequential purposes, though. No one wants to play cards with her because she can use her scrying to cheat.
  • A strict pacifist.
  • Has a habit of getting lost in thought. Will fall quiet for an extended period of time while thinking about something or focusing. Sometimes will do so mid-conversation, which can cause issues.
  • Immortals do not require much sleep, but nonetheless, she is the sort to stay up late and be reluctant to wake up early.
  • Has a strong appreciation for art in all forms - music, sculpture, fashion, dance, painting, etc. She finds it enriching to analyse and consider the hidden meaning behind a piece of artwork.
  • Can play a few instruments. Harp, Lyre, and Panflute are her favourite.
  • Hobbies include: Stargazing, writing poetry, playing solitaire, pondering the orb.
  • Halo is incorporeal, made of light. By default it is usually present, but it can be "turned off" at will.
  • Blood resembles liquid silver.
  • Tarot card assignment: The High Priestess, The Moon.

STORY

Polaris was not always who she is today. She was born a mortal human. However, her recollection of this time is hazy at best. Angels do not often keep their past-life memory upon ascending. Names, faces, and details become lost in a fog, faded further over the passing centuries. There are times when the mystery of who she once was gnaws at her, but even attempts to discern through magical means are met with figurative radio static, as if there was some kind of interference.

In any case, upon resurrection she was given a new identity and purpose, that life is far behind her now...

Throughout the centuries she has drifted, as the currents of life pull her to and fro, leading her along an ever winding path -- at times feeling lost, at times discovering herself.

n her early decades she studied as an apprentice diviner, studious and diligent. A rising star, her talent for the craft was soon noted, her growing skill caught the attention of many. There was great value in power such as this, the service of an oracle was highly sought after. When she later began working as an advisor for nobles, Polaris found herself in a position of great power.

Yet it felt wrong, like a gilded cage. The weight of such responsibility was a heavy burden to bear, all the pressure and expectations it brought upon her. Ever humble, Polaris never felt proud or boastful in the spotlight. Being watched felt deeply uncomfortable -- the irony of that was not lost -- but she wished, for once, to be seen as a person, not just as a tool.

Despite her doubts and fears, there was a ray of light in this situation. In the company of lords, this is how she came to meet Aura. The angel of the sun was everything Polaris was not -- ambitious and confident -- it was admirable. And captivating. By chance (and perhaps a little deliberate foresight) they kept crossing paths. As they got to know each other, they began to find convenient excuses to spend more time together. Aura would be willing to stand up for her, and Polaris felt safe and comforted by her presence. Over time, their bond grew into into a close relationship that toed a blurry line between friendship and something more intimate.

But alas, they were different as night and day. Their chosen lifepaths diverged, and conflicting morals pushed that loyalty to a breaking point, driving a rift between them...

Her visions told of dark clouds on the horizon. Interdimensional conflicts were escalating, the tension was heavy in the air like a storm about to break.

The sun twins chose to heed the call, joining the war against the demons. Polaris was no warrior, however. She stayed behind, instead seeking to help by volunteering as a medic and healer. The senseless bloodshed she witnessed haunts her, turning her further away from the conflict.

Aura had tried to insist that Polaris' skills would be better put to use as a spymaster and strategist. But this was exactly the fate the oracle had feared, to be used, to be wielded like a weapon. By principle, Polaris refused to use her scrying abilities in ways that could cause harm. She believed in a different possibility, vouching for a peaceful and diplomatic solution. This opinion made her very unpopular, some considered it heretical. No one cared to listen to her guidance when it was not what they wanted to hear.

During a confrontation, Polaris finally found the courage to put her foot down. She had hoped Aura of all people would understand, would stand by her decision. Instead, her old friend turned on her, accusing her of sympathising with the enemy. This has put Polaris in a perilous position, with a dangerous rival waiting for the chance to bring her downfall...
